A period spent in prison – on remand or serving a sentence – can have far-reaching consequences for social security benefit entitlement, both for the person in prison and for their family. If you advise prisoners or their families about benefit entitlement, then our short course will help you navigate this complex area. The course uses case studies to illustrate the impact of prison on the benefits most commonly affected. By the end you should feel more confident in advising on the issues that most frequently come up for this group.The course covers:What happens to benefits when someone goes into prisonSorting out benefits on release from custodyThis course will be delivered online via Zoom from 10am to 1pm with a half hour break from 11.15 – 11.45. It is a practical course, delivered using a combination of trainer presentation, exercises and group discussion. Participants will need a Wi-Fi connection and a suitable device to access the internet. It is not recommended to join via a mobile phone.
