A range of new support has been introduced for children in Scotland alongside the UK system in recent years. The Scottish child payment is available to an estimated 430,000 children, almost half of all children under sixteen in Scotland, but a concerted effort is needed to maximise take-up. Best Start grants and Best Start foods can make a big difference in the early years. In most cases, qualifying for these devolved benefits depends on securing entitlement to UK benefits, which remain the primary source of support. While new Scottish payments will help reduce child poverty, some families in Scotland may see their overall income reduced by the two child limit and benefit cap rules in UK benefits. This course provides an overview of the support available from pregnancy to school age.
