Supporting low-income families courses

These courses are relevant in England, Wales and Scotland. Find out about help available to people who have low incomes, are struggling to afford the essentials for everyday life and need help urgently.

You'll learn what you can do if you're waiting for the first payment of a new benefit claim or you're living off reduced benefit payments due to a sanction. You'll also find out about the financial help available if you've experienced a crisis or disaster or need help to set up or maintain your home. 

Each course is full of examples and interactive features to help you to engage with the content and practice what you've learned.

They will each take about 30 minutes to complete.

This course is relevant in Scotland only. Explore how school communities can reduce and remove the financial barriers to education for children and young people from low-income families.

When children and young people can't take part at school because of the cost, they can feel excluded and miss out on experiences and learning. Find out about the steps schools across Scotland are taking to remove financial barriers and to ensure all children and young people can take part at school. 

The course is full of examples, interactive elements, quizzes, videos and links to other resources. 

This course will take between 60 and 90 minutes to complete, and can be undertaken in more than one session.

This course is relevant in Scotland only. Learn about the causes of poverty and the stigma it creates, as well as looking at what you and your service can do to support hard-up households. 

Poverty is usually about things that people can't control, like low paid work and rising living costs. Anyone can fall into poverty through no fault of their own. Poverty affects people's health and wellbeing throughout their lives. Looking at a number of case studies, find out how services can tackle stigma, encourage people to talk about money and ensure they get the support they need.

This course will take up to 60 minutes to complete.
